Twitter India launches SMS-based digital governance service

Twitter has launched Twitter Samvad, a digital governance service part of the Indian government's Digital India initiative. The service will essentially deliver a set of curated Tweets from the government agencies and leaders' accounts to mobile users as SMS.

The SMSs will offer updates on government services, policies and activities to citizens who sign up for the service through 16 government accounts in the launch phase. Anyone with a mobile phone, with our without a data plan, can register for the service by giving a missed call to a unique number for each of the partners.

Twitter says Twitter Samvad can also be used during the time of emergency with the ability to deliver live updates by government bodies including time sensitive information like law and order situations as well as details about any rescue efforts.

Citizens will be able to sign up for the alerts service by giving a missed call to a number associated with a government Twitter account. For Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the number is 011 3006 3006.
