Microsoft announces Cortana for iOS and Android

After rumours about Microsoft working on a version of its Cortana virtual assistant for the iPhone and Android smartphones Microsoft has officially announced the product. Separate versions of the Cortana app will be released for Android and iOS, which is keeping in line with the software giants new cross-platform strategy.

The Cortana app will not be as integrated as it is on Windows, but will still provide notifications for sports results, flights, amongst other things. Most of the digital assistant features that are available on Windows and Windows Phone will be made available to iPhone and Android users.

The apps will also help users sync their data across Android, iOS and Windows. However, at the time of announcement the app wasn't available neither on Google Play Store or Apple App Store.

Using the companion app, iPhone and Android users who also have Windows 10 PCs or tablets will be able to better integrate with Microsoft's services across their devices. The app will allow users to find apps like OneNote, OneDrive, Skype, and Office apps.

Currently, this is only a preview, but eventually the company claims users will be able to ask the app queries and more or less the iOS and Android apps will have functional parity with the Windows variant, but will not be deeply integrated at the OS level.
