Reports emerging have claimed that social platforms such as YouTube, Instagram, and Twitter are disguising ads in order to avoid detection from users. Ads are one of the most despised entities in the world of Internet, but they are also a necessary evil to generate revenue. Platforms such as these seem to have chosen a newer way to do it.
These stealth advertisements parade around in the guise of posts from listed contacts, and as a result, never arouse suspicion.
According to a report in the Times of India, all such brands have teams who have the specific job of figuring out more ways in which companies can insert their ads in the feeds of contacts. This initiative is called 'Zoo' at YouTube, 'Creative Shop' at Instagram, and 'Brand Strategy' at Twitter. These teams are often hired by ad agencies and are well versed in the field. They are expected to be well aware of the latest trends in whichever corner of the world they are placed in.
Instagram has a user base of 300 million people the world over. While initially, it refrained from inserting sponsored messages or ads, it is slowly including ads in it feed now. This phenomenon has been noticed ever since it was acquired by Facebook for $715 million.
In the report, Cedric Atlan, of the Creative Shop at Facebook says, "The brand has to express itself as if it's a person and respect the community." He goes on to add, "You have come upon the brand the same way you would a friend or someone from your family. The advertising needs to be integrated and not disturb the user."
